A Modest Proposal
A modest proposal (1729), the most famous satire in the English language, was composed by Jonathan Swift at the age of sixty-two but with the same provocative and politically incorrect spirit of his early writings. This time to shake the “furious indignation” of the most uncomfortable satirist of the eighteenth century are the intolerable conditions of misery in which Ireland finds itself due to the colonialist exploitation of the English rulers. With the impassive language of the theorists of utilitarianism, the anonymous author of the pamphlet proposes the most economically advantageous solution to capitalize on the prolificacy of the Irish: to sell their fattest children who, cooked in various ways, will provide exquisite dishes to the rich. Overpopulation and unemployment will also be combated, while the poorest will save, also contributing to the economic well-being of the entire nation. The countrymen understood perfectly well that the brutal sarcasm was not directed at the derelicts and beggars who lined the streets of Dublin, but at the British politicians and their ruthless logic of profit, and they hailed Swift as a patriot. Combined with the great desecrating tradition of Rabelais and Voltaire, this classic of satirical literature sets up a disconcerting and paradoxical parody of the inequity of social discrimination and the enslavement of ethics to the economic system. A very current, lucid and terrible text of political literature, of which we present a new Italian edition translated and annotated with impeccable and passionate care

A TALE OF TWO CITIES
From April to November 1859, Charles Dickens wrote “A Tale of Two Cities” in weekly episodes. This method of writing a novel was brilliant. Thus keeping his readers waiting for the next episode and with bated breath, he manages to make a lot of money. Also, all levels of the people of those times could read them. At that time most books were only in the possession of wealthy people, and as newspapers ran from hand to hand, now this new method meant that everyone could afford them. This is why the number of Dickens’ readers is growing more and more.

Frankenstein
The fame and influence of the “Frankenstein”; or, the “Modern Prometheus” by Mary W. Shelley have been enormous in the history of literature and perhaps there is no other work of the Gothic tradition that has penetrated more deeply into the collective imagination. Neither a gothic novel, nor a ghost story, nor a science-fiction tale, Frankenstein is a real “count philosophique” dressed in all the gothic paraphernalia dear to the taste of the public to whom Shelley was addressing. With a simple plot, complicated however by sophisticated narrative devices, according to the system of Chinese boxes, the novel tells the story of the creature built by the scientist Victor Frankenstein, a convinced advocate of galvanism, assembling pieces of corpse collected in tombs and slaughterhouses. The monster is not the dull and brutal creature that the cinematographic tradition from Karloff onwards has represented us, but a sensitive being who suffers from the final condemnation that the whole of humanity, influenced solely by his appearance.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Published in a magazine between July 1891 and June 1892, the twelve texts that make up this collection include the most famous cases of the immortal investigator. Despite Dr. Watson’s marriage to the handsome Mary of The Sign of Four, the two former roommates continue to welcome clients in the apartment at 221B Baker Street. From the young king blackmailed by his lover in A Scandal in Bohemia – which introduces the only woman who has ever struck Holmes’ imaginary, Irene Adler – to the ruddy merchant who can’t figure out the Red Hair League, passing through the young woman whose boyfriend has disappeared from the carriage that was taking him to the wedding in A case of identity, characters and mysteries crowd the pages of this volume. Closed rooms, moving carriages, orange seeds arrived by post and wedding banquets are just some of the situations that the most famous duo in literature will find themselves investigating. With their mysteries set to perfection even in the space of a few pages, these tales are perhaps the most interesting example of Conan Doyle’s creativity and narrative mastery. An ideal reading for those who have yet to discover the great master of mystery and for those who already know the most famous cases of him, completed by a writing by Joseph Bell, the doctor who inspired Conan Doyle’s best known and most successful of his characters.

It is incredible that an electronic device of 200 or 300 grams can contain an entire library of thousands of volumes. And then using an eReader is like reading through the pages of a paper book or at least it offers the same sensation, even in many devices there is also the noise of the page turned. Browsing the internet, there are many websites that deal in whole or in part with the distribution of free or paid e-books.
As we all know, the internet has revolutionized our world in a very short time. And a lot has also changed with regard to the promotion of books or any other art object. It is for this reason that many emerging writers release e-books for download on various portals. If the book is worth it, the author’s popularity can skyrocket in no time. All e-books can be downloaded for free after quick registration.
The complete books in the free download are generally classic texts of English literature that have lost their copyrights, the famous copyright, due to various factors: the author has been deceased for over 70 years, the emerging author has distributed the book free of rights, the publishing house decides to make the text free for a certain period, and so on.
It is usually not uncommon to come across recent e-books and even bestsellers in free digital copies, or at most sold at a symbolic and affordable price.
