Oliver Twist
Oliver Twist is the title of the second novel by the English writer Charles Dickens, a work in which the author deals with social issues such as poverty, the exploitation of child labor and crime. Published in 1837 and set in London, Oliver Twist tells the story of the homonymous orphan boy who, at the age of nine, escapes from the institute where he grew up and joins a gang of young criminals. The work inaugurates the trend of the English social novel and, through Oliver Twist, Dickens recounts the exploitation of child labor and social injustice. Oliver Twist grows up in an orphanage and starts working in a factory when he is only 9 years old, he earns a reputation as an agitator for asking for an extra ration of food. From this moment Oliver is removed from the factory and starts working for a gravedigger but has no easy life and decides to move to London. But Fagin and Bill kidnap Oliver with the help of the prostitute Nancy. Once back in the Fagin group, he forces Oliver Twist to rob the home of wealthy Mrs. Maylie. During the theft Oliver is injured and Mrs. Maylie, moved by the story of the boy’s misadventures, decides to cure him. Fagin does not give up and contacts the thug Monks to kidnap him. Monks, however, discovers that he is his half-brother and Mrs. Maylie’s nephew and that he will therefore inherit a large fortune. Nancy uncovers the two’s criminal plot and alerts Mr. Brownlow and Mrs. Maylie. For this Nancy will be killed but Mr. Brownlow captures Fagin, thus putting an end to his criminal plan. Oliver discovers that he is Mrs. Maylie’s grandson and can therefore inherit her fortune. Oliver Twist is also adopted by Mr. Brownlow and begin his life as a bourgeois.

A Modest Proposal
A modest proposal (1729), the most famous satire in the English language, was composed by Jonathan Swift at the age of sixty-two but with the same provocative and politically incorrect spirit of his early writings. This time to shake the “furious indignation” of the most uncomfortable satirist of the eighteenth century are the intolerable conditions of misery in which Ireland finds itself due to the colonialist exploitation of the English rulers. With the impassive language of the theorists of utilitarianism, the anonymous author of the pamphlet proposes the most economically advantageous solution to capitalize on the prolificacy of the Irish: to sell their fattest children who, cooked in various ways, will provide exquisite dishes to the rich. Overpopulation and unemployment will also be combated, while the poorest will save, also contributing to the economic well-being of the entire nation. The countrymen understood perfectly well that the brutal sarcasm was not directed at the derelicts and beggars who lined the streets of Dublin, but at the British politicians and their ruthless logic of profit, and they hailed Swift as a patriot. Combined with the great desecrating tradition of Rabelais and Voltaire, this classic of satirical literature sets up a disconcerting and paradoxical parody of the inequity of social discrimination and the enslavement of ethics to the economic system.
