Different people ask me most time what the relationship is between content writing and copy. There seems to be a misunderstanding between the two terms on where one starts and another begins.

Content writing and copywriting are alike. Most copy writings are content writing but not at all content writings can be a copywriting.

Having this simple understanding will save you from a lot of heartache and embarrassment as a writer. It would create a difference because you have been able to place specificity in your writing; thereby refraining from the mistake of mixing the two with no plan in sight.

To understand this you will have to understand what copy writing is; Copywriting is a writing style by definition that is word creation centered, sales and profit maximization is the end point. With this short but explanatory definition, you can know that copywriting, no matter how well distinct and well scripted it is, it still has to do with word creation, word arrangement and literary prowess, and that is content creation.

Content creation has a lot to do with your words, it’s about understanding a terminology and you creating corresponding literature to explain and expound on it; so generally speaking, most, if not all of your formulated writings are content writings.

So you can see how copywriting can also be content writing.

How all content writings are not copywriting?

So not all your content writings can be called copywriting; lead generation is the characteristic feature of content writer, while sales and profit is for copywriting.
